The night [music] is dark and full of theories. [music] What if Tywin discovered Littlefinger's schemes and sided with the Starks? Let's explore the depths of it in the video. Tywin sits in his solar in Casterly Rock. The news about Tyrion being seized by Catelyn Stark on his desk. Every bone in his body is telling him to call his banners and set the Riverlands on fire all the way to Riverrun. But something is telling him that there's something more here. None of this makes sense. Tyrion trying to assassinate a second son of a great house and Catelyn Stark seizing him at an in reeks of [clears throat] a plot. But who who would have the audacity and who would Catelyn Stark trust enough to make that accusation? Admir Tully was a straightforward fool with no intelligence network. Ned Stark was far too honorable to do something in his shadow like that. Liza Aaron was mad, so perhaps she had put her sister up to it. Tywin Lannister was no man's dupe. He was going to find out whoever was responsible and he would root them out of whatever hole they were in. Kevin, prepare a battalion, but send word to every house between here and Riverrun that our intentions are peaceful. Someone is trying to set the lions on the wolves, and I intend to make them wish for the fates of the reigns and Tarbex at once, brother. Within the week, Tywin and his knights are at the gates of Riverrun, calling for a parlay with Sir Edmure in place of his father. >> Lord Tywin, I must admit, this is a surprise. What brings you here? Your sister has arrested my son on suspicious charges and I had put about that she was coming home to Riverrun. Is she here? Answer me honestly now. Proud as ever. Do not test me, Sir Edmir. Is she here? She is not. I do not mean her any harm. I simply wish to know the nature of the accusation and her evidence against my son. Why the restraint, Lord Tywin? Because I believe that someone is trying to set wolves against lines. And I mean to make that person pay for trying to make me into his cat's paw. I have limited time, so I only ask one more time. Where is Captain Stark? Sir Edmir pauses and tries to judge what the old lion could be getting at. Finally, though, his abrupt manner convinces Edmir that he means what he says. I haven't seen my sister in years, but if I had to venture a guess, I would say she's at the eerie with Lysa. Clever. You've been most helpful. Thank you, Sir Edmir. Your assistance will not be forgotten. >> The Lannister party arrives at the bloody gates just a few hours before Tyrion's trial. Brendan Blackfish watches as the man he last saw during the war of the nine penny king rides up to the bloody gate with five men at his back. Tywin is more grizzled and he's shaved off his hair saved for his beard. [music] But the same forceful green eyes blaze with purpose. I wish to speak with Lysa Tully. This is not a declaration of war, but a father who wishes to protect his son. Though he feels no familiar affection for Tyrion, he knows that this tactic will appear appeal to both Liza and Catelyn's motherly hearts. I knew you'd come calling, Tarwin. How long has it been since the Stepstones? Almost 40 years. Now, shall we get to the matter of hand? I'm short on time. All right, I'll let you up, but that brute behind you stays. Done. I will require bread and salt before I enter the gate. I want to make sure that I have a guest right before going through the bloody gate. Fine, squire. Get some bread and salt for Lord, Tywin. Impatience roaring inside his stomach, Tywin disdains to humiliate himself by being raised in the basket and takes a mule to the top. Finally, he enters the high hall of the eerie to find Robin Aaron suckling on his mother's breast. >> Are you seriously letting your son do that? >> My son is a fragile little bird. >> I can see that now. Now I understand why John Erin wished to foster the boy with me. >> Lysa pulls her son close to her, staring daggers at the old lion. Though her anger is tinged with no small amount of fear. Tywin sigh and strokes his beard. >> Peace, my lady. I have no interest in fostering Roberts. Now that we've set that matter to rest, where is your sister and my son? I want them brought to me now. >> Why? So you can do to us what you did to the Targaryenss? >> Tywin grits his teeth. He hates dealing with insane women, but for now he has to keep his temper in check and simply plate her. If I wanted to let slip the dogs of war, I would have let Gregor Clelegane loose in the Riverlands and started burning everything from Deep Den to Riverrun. Do not mistake my quiet demeanor for a lack of anger. It is only because I believe that something greater is a foot than a misstep by your sister. I want to talk to Lady Stark about why she stole my son. No, the imp was brought here and accused of a crime against my house. >> When I last looked, Brian Stark was not a member of House Aaron. >> The imp killed my husband. >> Tywin stares at Liza in incredulous amazement. Rarely has he ever been surprised like this, but somehow Lady Liza had managed to put a crack in his composure. >> You cannot be serious. >> Quite serious. He did it. I know he did. For a moment, Tywin matches glare with the insufferable madwoman that has dared to styy his investigation. However, rather than vent his fury, Tywin simply clasps his hands behind his back, then takes a long deep breath. >> Lady Liza, let us have a rational discussion. I would like to publicly defend my son from these accusations, and I am very sure that you would prefer to avoid a trial by battle. >> And why is that? because I intend to summon Gregor Kagane to act as my son's champion if you were to do that. I would prefer to avoid the kind of mess that Sregor is rather known for. Now, where is my son? I want him in Catelyn Stark in front of me now. Unable to refuse Tywin's request for a trial, she quickly extracts Tyrion from the sky cells and brings Catelyn to the hall. Once they arrive, Tyrion waddles over to stand next to his father. >> Father. Tyrion. With that, the trial of Tyrion Lannister begins. >> Now, if you would be so kind, I would like to know how exactly you came to believe that Tyrion attempted to murder your son and managed to kill John Erin. Bearing in mind that even if he is a whoremongering, indulent drunkard, he is not a complete imbecile. evidenced by the fact that before this point, Tyrion has never attempted to do something so monumentally ridiculous as attempting to pointlessly murder a second son who was already in danger of dying would decide to risk the stability of the realm on a whim. Thank you so much for defending me, father. >> And what proof do you have that he didn't attempt to kill my son? >> Because Tyrion is not capable of giving the order to murder a child. >> And how can you be so sure that he isn't capable? because I am. The coldness of his words and tone cause the entire room to go silent when put so bluntly, Catelyn stout starts to doubt everything, coupled with Tyrion's comments about Littlefinger and how Tywin is cooperating the testimony. She lays out the events, the attempt on Bran's life, the cat's paw dagger, Littlefinger and Varys laying out the accusations and her decision to act at the inn of the crossroads. With every word, Tywin's anger starts to rise, though most of it is not directed at Catelyn. So despite the fact that my son has a proven record of betting on Jaime consistently, even to the point where half the court in King's Landing will deliberately bet against my son in order to bill him out of my coin, you arrest him. And worse, you did it on the word of Peter Beish, the man who has boasted to half of King's Landing about the fact that he took your maiden head. >> Watch your tongue. >> I know that he did not consummate his pathetic infatuation with you, Lady Stark. mainly because I know that Hostat Tully would have personally gilded him if he had. It appears as though you have been made a dupe in order to spark a civil war between our two houses. The question that we have before us is not if he did this, but why he has done this. >> What do you intend to do? >> Do what Brendan Stark should have done 15 years ago. I mean to end this mama's fast and to make Lord Beish regret the day he was born. after I pull his sworded schemes to the ground around his ears. With that, Tywin prepares to depart the Eerie. After leaving strict instructions not to send a letter to King's Landing, Lysa [music] attempts to forestall him, but due to Tywin's forceful and logical defense of Tyrion, the lords of the Veil allow him to depart with the dwarf. I'm touched that you defended me, father. Don't thank me yet. We still have quite a bit of work ahead of us. >> So, am I going back to Casterly Rock? No, you're coming with me to King's Landing. I have use for you. >> On the journey, Tywin intercepts Jaime as he flees the capital. His moderate good mood at his progress over the Tully Sisters is dashed when he finds that his son has attacked Ned Stark. Rather than having Jaime accompany him, he sends him to the Rock and rides into King's Landing with only Tyrion at his side. Without delay, the Lannister party rides straight to the Red Keep where Ned Stark sits on the Iron Throne holding court while Robert hunts. >> Everyone, get out. I must have words with the king's hand. [music] >> Ned leans forward in the Iron Throne, careful not to cut himself. There had never been any love lost between him and Tywin, especially after the sack of King's Landing. But he can't refuse him. Besides, he has questions of his own. Apologizing to the peasants, looking to get his judgment, he limps down from the throne and accompanies Tywin and Tyrion to a side room. >> First of all, Lord Stark, I apologize for the actions of my family. My men were butchered by your son. Am I supposed to forget that? >> No. My son acted rashly in defense of his brother. Something that your brother would have done if you were captured under suspicious charges. My brother was a good man. This is not a question of morality, merely familiar loyalty. Let us set aside what happened with Jaime and your men for the time being. I am willing to compensate you for their deaths and set aside your wife's abduction of my son on top of that. So long as you help me against the real enemy. This gives Ned pause. Tywin offering an alliance with him was not something he would have expected or wanted. Their history had been rocky to say the least, and now it was on a knife's edge. Something must be troubling the old lion if he actually wanted to create an alliance. I'm listening. Who is the real enemy? The Targaryenss, the free cities, the Iron Bank. Peter Beish. >> What? >> I spoke with your wife and Liza Aaron. Evidently, Lord Beaish lied to you about the dagger being his and losing it to Tyrion. >> He lays out what happened, using Tyrion to cooporate what he heard from Catelyn, as well as what he'd heard himself. Bluntly, he lays out the evidence that the accusations against Tyrion were false, as his sons don't bet against each other, that Tyrion had no motive to kill Bran, and that the dagger was not even owned by Tyrion at any point. I I recall Renley remarking that he wished that Tyrion was at the hands Tony to win a great deal of gold. I didn't consider it important at the time, but now he trails off, trying to think through the pain and milk of the poppy. >> I know you dislike me, Lord Stark. I've had to do many things men would consider dishonorable. However, I do not want the realm that my grandson stands to inherit torn apart by a civil war. Fine, let's get to our plans. Tywin smiles, and the three of them discuss what they mean to do against the master of coin. Ned wishes to accuse Littlefinger, but Tywin advises against this. If Beish is alerted before they can apprehend him, then he could escape and cause [music] more damage and chaos. Tywin had also noticed how shill Lysa had become when he'd determined to finish Brandon's work and puts forward that she might be an ally or at least another dupe. Ned is reluctant to believe, but when he hears from Tywin that Lysa claimed that Tyrion killed John Aaron, even if that made no sense, even though she'd only said the Lannisters had done it. After a long discussion, they come to the decision that they need to seize Littlefinger's books and find out what he'd been buying with his gold. Ned takes them and starts looking through them with Tywin. They quickly find the discrepancies. Far too many royal employees funneling money into Littlefinger's pockets. Tywin quickly collects these and attempts to arrest Littlefinger, but he escapes before they can grab him. For now, they send out men to hunt him down, placing a price on the man's head after seizing all of the documents from any established Littlefinger owned businesses. With Beish in the wind, Ned decides to send his daughters away. When this happens, Sansa inadvertently puts the pieces of Ned's investigation together. For a few hours, he wrestles with himself about what he should do. Tywin has been his partner in dealing with Littlefinger and whatever conspiracy he had been plotting. If this is revealed, Tywin's whole legacy collapses. If he accuses Cersei without hard proof, his and Tywin's fragile alliance will snap. To that end, he concocts a plan that will force Tywin onto his side. When Ned asks Tywin to come with him to the Godswood and listen to what was about to transpire in the meeting, the old lion agrees. Thinking that it is one of Littlefinger's agents. Careful to keep hidden, he puts himself behind a tree and watches Ned Stark. As soon as his daughter arrives, Tywin immediately wants to break cover and demand an explanation, but he restrains himself. He has learned the value of patience from this, and Ned Stark won't do this without cause. As he listens to the conversation unfold, and Cersei admits to the incest and nearly killing Bran, Stark with no proddding or coercion, Tywin's blood runs cold. Everything he'd built was now about to come crashing down around him. Perhaps Cersei had killed Jon Aaron, and Littlefinger was exploiting that. She'd ruin everything. So, this is what you brought me to listen to, Lord Stark. I must say I appreciate your trust in me. >> Father, >> you disgust me, Cersei. All you had to do was have one legitimate child with Robert. But you couldn't even do that. Now all that I've built since your grandfather nearly destroyed our house is going to be destroyed because of you. >> No, I >> But the damage is done. Cersei is confined to her chambers, and Tywin and Ned discuss what to do next. Tywin might be furious with Cersei, but he doesn't wish to disinherit his grandchild and expose them. Instead, he wishes to do this quiet for the sake of the realm stability. Knowing how much Tywin values his legacy, Ned counters that Joffrey is a coward and therefore unfit to carry the name Lannister. Remembering his own father's cowardly nature and how he would cause problems in the realm, Tywin agrees to a compromise. When Robert returns, the incest will be revealed. Jaime will be dismissed from the King's Guard. The children will return to Casterly Rock with the exception of Tommen who would marry Shireen Baratheon should Robert decide not to marry again. Tywin doesn't like it, but he knows Stannis is no friend of Littlefinger. So, he decides that the enemy of his enemy is at least a tool to be used. At the very least, Stannis was predictable, something that Tywin prefers as opposed to chaotic agents like Littlefinger. He contents himself with the fact that once Littlefinger is dead, he can work to rebuild what Cersei and Jaime have destroyed. Madness. Madness and stupidity. Um, sorry, Lord Tarwin. It had to be done, but I can see how much it pains you. [music] >> It's not just the fact that my children have done this. It's that I see what happened with my father happening to my family all over again. My father spoke highly of Tythos Lannister. >> He was a fool who wanted to be loved at the cost of humiliating our house and nearly dragging us into ruin. And after I die, there's going to be no one to save my house. Jaime lacks the political acumen, and he's thoroughly destroyed himself. Cersei is clearly insane. Tyrion might have some low cunning, but he doesn't have the strength to rule. It's all falling apart around me. Ned now sees Tywin in a new light. He's not the great lion he'd always thought he was. He's still that scared young man watching. His brutality and lack of humor were all reactions to that. He invites Tywin to discuss things and even tells him about how he felt when Brandon died and have to step into that position when he wasn't prepared for it. Despite himself, Tywin listens and they even start chatting like something akin to friends. They are speaking like that when Robert arrives with the hunting party gored by a boar. At once, Tywin is conflicted. The king is dying and he can simply take Ned Stark captive and use him as a hostage against the North. However, he has no idea how deep the rot goes with Littlefinger. And without the little weasel in his grasp, he doesn't know who he can trust other than that. So, he reveals the conversation with Cersei to [music] Robert. The king rages, but quickly disinherits Joffrey and the others in sight of several witnesses, which makes Tywin's teeth clench, but he knew the consequences. Joffrey is imprisoned with his mother in the black cells. After the king dies and Ned is named protector of the realm, Tywin immediately starts working with him, telling him that this is the perfect opportunity to hunt down Littlefinger. Ned will act as protector while Tywin acts his hand. Ned agrees, but only until Littlefinger is found. Without delay, they send all of the proof they've gathered and send it to Stannis on Dragonstone. Tywin, at least hoping that this will convince him to marry Shireen to Tommen as a sign of goodwill [music] for his service. However, despite Stannis being named heir, Renley leaves and departs for High Garden at the suggestion of Varys. With the Starks and Lannisters now allied, the Spider has to pivot to turn the Baratheonss and Tyrells against the Starks and Lannisters to achieve his goal of chaotic Westeros. Since he knows Renley's ambition as well as Stannis's entitlement, this is the perfect condition for chaos. However, Littlefinger resurfaces at Renley's camp, convincing him that Tywin [music] has turned the Starks against him and assuring him Beish will help bankroll his bid for kingship. Renley agrees and grants him Harrenhal for his efforts. Soon, the ravens from Dragonstone arrive, and when they do, Tywin slumps in his chair and puts his head in his hands. The letter reads, "Your bastard grandson will have no hands for me. I mean to take my birthright by storm. Your help with providing Littlefinger is a snake is accepted, but there is much consequence for your actions. House Lannister will not be unpunished for its part in the chaos. Tywin is now backed into a corner. He's now a bit player in this whole struggle. He's chosen patience and had paid dearly for it. He now has only Ned to work with. Honorable, idealistic, and stubborn Ned Stark. Even if he were to somehow get rid of Littlefinger, nothing would change. He's been ruined. His legacy destroyed. As if to punctuate his failure, Ned Stark walks in looking sympathetic. >> So, Stannis didn't accept your offer. >> No, he did not. Well, I did warn you that Stannis might not be amanable. For the first time in my life, I have no options, no recourse but to just slink back into the rock. It's not such a bad life. Tywin stares at Ned for a moment and then sees the difference. Ned is totally content with his life. He doesn't need to establish anything. He has his family, a secure legacy. All of Tywin's work from the slaughter of the reigns to Tarbach is now recontextualized in his mind is a man who has held on to his obsession with legacy that he'd crushed it. And now he's left with one desperate gamble. >> Is there any hope that you'll stand with me against Stannis? Stannis is the rightful king. Besides, I thought we wanted to get rid of Littlefinger, who's now resurfaced with Renley by all accounts. Tywin's fist clenches. For the first time, he doesn't know how to bully, coersse, or bribe his way to victory. He has to appeal to Ned's sense of legitimacy and sympathy. Ned, you're looking at a man who's lost everything he's ever valued. My son and daughter are disgraced. My grandchildren will be seen as paras. After I'm gone, the vultures will pick over House Lannister, leaving nothing behind. I am placing the fate of my house in your hands. Is there anyone who you would back who would allow me to maintain something of my legacy and leave something for my grandchildren where I will not die in fear that they will be torn apart? Someone who would treat Marcella like you treat Catelyn. Ned leans back in his chair, weighing if he should do what he's considering doing. It was stupid, perhaps even mad. But there is one person who he would consider backing instead of Stannis. There is one who I could stand behind. Who? Name him and I'll put the crown on his head myself. Do you remember why we fought Robert's rebellion? >> How could I forget? You've held the Targaryenss against me for almost two decades at this point. There was something more that we did not know about. Tell me, I've got some time before Stannis comes for my head. Ned tells him what happened at the Tower of Joy, even telling him how Reed had stabbed Arthur Dayne in the back, then finding Lyanna and promising to protect Jon. Tywin stares at his unlikely partner, all of his preconceived notions about the honorable Ned Stark being reframed. He was at once less honorable and more honorable at the same time. When the whole story is finished, Tywin leans forward. >> Your nephew is a good lad, brave, wise, worthy of ruling the seven kingdoms and rising to the seat of his forefathers. Talin. He's a member of the Night's Watch. For Swan, the ability to marry or wear a crown, both of which seem to be critical for what you have planned. I'll trade him for Jaime and myself. What? If need be, I'll go to the wall along with a few of my panammen, including the ones who took part in the deaths of the Targaryenss. I'll pay any price for my legacy to continue and my family to be safe in the years to come. And for that, I need you, Ned. If your price is that I pay for my crimes, I'll pay. >> After some time of silence, Ned nods and draws up an order for the Night's Watch. He and Tywin will go to the wall while the rest of his family goes to Casterly Rock. However, Tywin stops Ned before he leaves. >> Thank you, Ned. >> I won't abandon a man I'd consider an ally. We might not be friends, but we are allies. When Stannis arrives, all he finds are Joffrey and Cersei in cells. Within hours, they're executed for treason. Tywin had managed to convince Ned that Joffrey at least was guilty due to the Butcher's boy incident and his general display display of cruelty. Ned and Tywin go first to Casterly Rock, leaving Sir Barristan to guard the two children. At the mention of serving the son of Rhaegar, Barristan leapt at the opportunity. At Winterfell, they discussed matters with Rob and Catelyn. Ned puts command of the army in his son's hands since his legs still recovering and then lays out the plan to crown Jon. Catelyn and the children are shocked, not the least being Sansa, who had never seen Jon as anything other than a bastard. Finding out he was a prince in disguise all along breaks her worldview. Catelyn now has to wrestle with knowing that she'd hated the boy for no reason all these years, that [music] Ned had been protecting his nephew and had always been faithful. As Tywin sees Ned interact with his children and how they look [music] at him, a pain starts to grow inside him. A longing to have this as his legacy, a strong family that will stand by each other. At that moment, he determines to make things right. With all speed, Ned and Tywin arrive at the wall with a small force of men, [music] only to find out that Mormont has left on a great ranging to find Benjamin Stark. Tywin's frustration at barely missing the boy is matched by his incredul regarding the White. Initially, he is skeptical of the report until he sees the dead hand still moving. >> Impossible. This changes everything. Tarwin, the war for the throne needs to be put on hold. >> How are we going to convince anyone? >> We can discuss the throne later. We can use this hand as proof. They are not going to accept any proof, Ned. They'll think we're using it as a ploy. This likely wouldn't have happened if you and I weren't partners. And yet, we are. So, we must make do with what we have. Fine. I'll go north and bring Jon Snow back. I should come. >> No, Ned. You're too injured and I need speed. I'll bring your boy home. I swear. Ned had never heard those words out of Tywin's mouth before. He knew that Tywin didn't have any options. That he was trying to salvage what he could. And even with the end of the world, he was still focused on his own ambitions. >> All right, I'll stay behind. But I want to be the one to tell Jon. I don't want him hearing it from a stranger. With that, Tywin sets out through the wall toward fist of the first man, the last known location that Mormont was heading toward. Eventually, he reaches the fist and immediately asks to see Jon Snow. When he finds that Jon has left with Corin half, last seen heading into the Frost Fangs. Tywin slumps in his saddle as he sees his plans starting to fall apart again. He'd missed Jon again, and now he might be gone. >> It's all going to ruin. This all has been pointless. >> Slowly, he turns his horse [music] away, preparing to ride back to the wall when the old bear calls to him and asks him to stay. The Night's Watch still needs help against the wildlings. For a moment, Tywin wants to just coldly say he fails to see how that's his problem. But then he thinks of how Ned would look at him if he abandoned these men. It wouldn't be disappointment, not anger. It would likely just be rec resignation. [music] Ned would have been proven right that Tywin was the man he'd always believed him to be stealing himself. Tywin commands his men to defend the hill. When the battle comes, it's not Wildlings, but the White Walkers. Tywin and his men join in the battle and manage to hold back the whites, but soon the defense breaks. [music] Tywin quickly assesses the movement of the dead and finds that they are surprisingly well organized. Something intelligent is directing them. Eventually, he comes face to face with a white walker. Its strange armor and icec colored eyes and face, giving it an unearly appearance. Tywin tries fighting it with his sword, but after a few contacts, the blade shatters from the cold. As he stares up into the face of the strange thing, he sees something there. A dark intelligence, something that perhaps could be re reasoned with. He has no time to react before a fat boy with a dragon glass dagger leaps forward and stabs the other in the back. Tywin doesn't know whether to stare at the remains of the White Walker or the man who killed it. >> I owe you my life. What's your name? >> Samuel Tarly of Hornhill. Or I was born of Hornhill. Everyone calls me Sam. Well, Sam Tarly. Let's figure out a way to get out of this death trap. The fighting is hard, but with Tywin's forces and tactical expertise, they managed to retreat after setting several fires. However, in the blizzard, Tywin is separated from the rest and has to hunker down in a cave. When he emerges, the land has gone silent. Not even a single living thing inside. Unable to contain himself, Tywin throws the lump that remains of his sword on the ground and swings onto his sword's saddle. After several hours of wandering alone in the north, he decides that he's lost and sits [music] down to start a fire. When his efforts are unsuccessful, he abandons the effort and simply leans against a tree. Tywin instinctively reaches for his sword at the sight of the strange knights watchman on giant elk only to find that it's gone. Before he can flee, the figure points toward the north. Someone wants him to walk with him. When Tywin enters the cave of the three-eyed raven, he's faced with an impossibility. A dead man trapped in a weirwood. >> Tywin Lannister, I was not expecting you to come here. >> Indeed. And who are you >> in life? I was called Brandon Rivers, but also Lord Blood Raven. You're not the only one to have a charming song named after your deeds, Lord Tywin. >> Indeed. So why am I here? >> I'm in to help you on your quest to find Jon Snow. He is in great danger. He's alive. Where? Tell me. >> He is with the Wildling army. He is posing as a deserter in order to gain their trust. However, you might be able to save him if you follow my instructions. I've made it clear that I'll do whatever I can to save the boy. Now, where can I find him? So, ye be warned, Lord Tywin. This boy will be your house's salvation and your doom. What do you mean? I can only see glimpses of what is to come. A dragon with white scales and red eyes defending a lioness with golden fur and green eyes from a huntsman and a fiery bow. A small red bird whispering in the ear of a great stag and two crowns. One the crown of the kings of winter, the other the crown of the rock. But the clearest I see is you standing before the army of the dead with no one there to hear. I knew the Ties were against me, but a fiery bow. What? What could that mean? You do not have much time. Go find the army. Save the boy. But before you leave, you'll find something that your heart has desired for a very long time in the roots next to me. Confused, Tywin reaches in and pulls free a sword. Though he's only seen drawings of this weapon, he recognizes it [music] as Dark Sister, the sword of Queen Venia Targaryen, and many others, such as Don the Rogue Prince, [music] Sir Aemon the Dragon Knight, and lastly, the man before him, Brandon Rivers. [music] Now that he has a Valyrian steel sword, Tywin admits to feeling disappointed. He'd offered kings ransoms and gold to many houses for their swords, but they'd all refused. Now to have one handed to him was rather anticlimactic in a way. Squashing his disappointment, [music] Tywin buckles it onto his belt and leaves the cave, determined to find Jon Snow. It doesn't take much time to find the army, though Tywin is rapidly feeling the pain of early onset starvation, gnawing at his stomach. When the wildlings emerge from the rocks, Tywin raises his hands, claiming that he's there to speak with the king beyond the wall. Within an hour, the old lion sits across from the king beyond the wall in a shabby tent with Jon Snow near the side of the tent. Didn't expect a high lord to come here. What brings you to our camp, old lion? I have a proposal for you. I've seen the army of the dead, and I'd rather not add your host to it. So, I propose a deal. I will convince Ned Stark and whoever is in control of the Night's Watch to allow you through the wall. Jon stares at Tywin in surprise. Every time Ned had spoken about Tywin Lannister, it had been with disgust. Now the two were allies. Also, I want this boy to come with me. I have use for him. And what use could you have for a ranger of the Night's Watch? If you think Ned Stark's bastard is some mere ranger, you're gravely mistaken. The boy is a valuable asset in the wars to come. I also want you to aid in my fight for securing my house's place in the realm. If you do this, I will give you lands within the Westerland and the Reach, the most fertile lands in the realm. All right, old lion. We'll take your offer. Betray us and the boy dies. Understood. The army moves south, and as they do, Tywin takes the opportunity to get to know the lad. As he does, the more he sees that Jon is what he needs. He's brave and idealistic, but there are seeds of a pragmatic leader based on what he'd did by killing the half-hand. And when he finds out that Jon is a war, he wishes to have the boy trained in the use. Jon is reluctant, but Tywin insists that it's part of him, just as his arm or leg. By the time they reach the fist of the first men, Jon is able to completely control Ghost and two ravens. The trip isn't all smooth. Tywin has no idea what to think of Tormmont Giants Bane and his tall tales. You're not serious. You claim to have mistaken a she bear for a woman in a fur coat and actually culated with it. I I did. >> Well, I suppose that's not the strangest thing I've heard. Ned leans heavily against the wall, looking out at the north. Beside him sits Sam Tarly, the boy watching just as expectantly as Ned. The news that had come to Castle Black had been dire. Jon missing in the frost fangs. Tywin lost in a blizzard. And finally, the old bear betrayed and murdered by mutineers after suffering a grievous defeat by the white walkers. As if to add to his woes, the horn blows once, twice. Wildlings were approaching the wall. This just keeps getting better. Wait, that looks like Jon and Coast with Tywin at the front. They may be hostages. We'll have to make a bargain for them. Get me to the bottom now. However, before they can depart, Tywin's voice rings out. >> Ned, as I promised, I've brought him back. and I brought allies. >> Ned quickly goes down in the lift and opens the gate to allow a small group of wildlings through the wall to discuss terms. Initially, Ned is surprised that Tywin would allow the horde of wildlings through the wall, but when he presents his reasons that they have giants, wargs, and tens of thousands of experienced troops. The scales are tipped more in their favor. Besides, they don't want any of these people added to the army of the dead. After discussing terms with Mance, they agree to let him through the wall. Once that's done, Ned and Tywin sit down with Jon in the King's Tower. They quickly lay out what has happened from Littlefinger scheming to set them against each other up to the letter from Stannis Baratheon. >> So, Father, what's this all about? Why did you send Tywan Lannister to bring me back to the wall? >> Ned, tell him what you told me. John, you're not my bastard. You're the son of Rhaegar and Lyanna. You're the heir to the Iron Throne. Tarwin has been a great help to me. And so I'm giving him a claimant that I can support. What? Why? Because I need the North to stand against Stannis Baratheon and his brother. At the moment they're at odds with each other, but that may change. I need you to marry my granddaughter, Marcela, and give me a way to ensure that my house is not devoured by the vultures. You're the key to my family survival. I ensured your family survival by helping to expose Littlefinger. Now I need your help to ensure mine. You saved my life. If you want me to help protect your family, I'll do it. >> Good. Ned, you can move half of the wildland south towards King's Landing by sea, accompanied by your fleet, while sending the rest along with your main host south through the twins. Are you sure Walter Frey will cooperate? >> I will make the old weasel cooperate. If he gives you any trouble, play the reigns of Castmir and his halls to let him know what the Lannisters are capable of. So, I'm to be released from my vows. If that's so, I'd like to make a request. >> What? Sam, I'd like him to be released as well, especially if we're going to be fighting in the reach. Done. The boy saved my life with the fist of the first men and killed a white walker. Such courage should not go unrewarded. After a meeting at Winterfell, where all of the discoveries and revelations are laid out, the Northmen agree to march south to support Jon's claim. There are even a few surprises when in order to ease tensions, Mage Mormont suggests to marry Tormund. >> He's been slipping back and forth over the wall to keep me warm on cold winter nights. Might as well make it official. >> Well, there's one mystery solved that I never thought to have answered. >> Go boil your bald head, old lion. >> Despite the laughter, she and Tormund clap him affectionately on the back. Tywin isn't sure how to take this, but he finds the laughter of the Northman halls strangely relaxing. There's no barbs, no insults, just friends joking with each other, and he's a part of it. With that, the North begins to mobilize with Ned acting as general and Rob as his second in command. However, after Tywin sees Rob's talents for tactics, the old lion requests that the young wolf can come south with Jon to the Westerlands. Initially, Catelyn is hesitant, but Ned vouches for Tywin and sends the Karst Starks and Umber forces with them. While Tywin seeks out Jon in the north, Renley and Stannis's conflict comes to a head at the walls of King's Landing. Stannis has the city, but Renley has the army. However, Stannis has something that Renley doesn't. Melisandre, but that's only part of his plan. There's someone he knows will turn on the Tyrells if key players are removed. Randall Tarly. With these two pieces in play, Stannis begins his opening moves. After the failed negotiation, Renley sits in his tent chatting with Mace Tyrell. Without a sound, a shadow enters the room and kills both the fat flower and the proud stag. Chaos rapidly spreads through the camp, but Randall Tarly quickly asserts control. As [music] the Stormlander troops start lobbying to join Stannis, Randall receives a letter with Stannis's seal of the stag and fiery heart. Your time has come to take control of the Reach. Join my army. Take Marjorie into custody and betrothe her to your son. Randall immediately [music] orders his men to seize the remaining Tyrell sons and hand them over to the to Stannis who keeps them contained while Randall secures Marjgery in the camp. Now that the Tyrells are neutralized, Tarly takes control of the Reach's army. Lord Tarly, prepare the men to march on the Golden Tooth. It's time to be at the lion in its den. At once, your grace, but I believe there was someone you wanted brought to you. >> Ah, yes. Peter Bish, hang him above the gates. As the army rides through the king's gate, Littlefinger's body swings in the breeze, suspended from a rope around his neck. When Tywin arrives at the rock with Jon and Rob, they disembark. They disembark with 6,000 northern cavalry and nearly twice as many wildlings along with their wargs and skin changers. As soon as he arrives, Kevin informs him that Stannis has the reach and is marching on the Golden Tooth. Tywin is dismayed, but the die is cast. The only way through this was through battle. >> Call the banners. Let's see if the huntsman is as good a foe as his reputation claims. >> Once Kevin departs, Tywin introduces Jon to his future bride. Though Jon remembers not having a high opinion of her when seeing her at Winterfell last, he finds Marcela is actually very intelligent as well as kind and well spoken. Tommen seems most excited to have a big brother that he can look up to, even if Grey Wind and Ghost scare his cats. Within the fortnight, the Golden Tooth is taken and the Reach army floods into the Westerlands. Despite the overwhelming odds, Tywin and has Kevin prepare for battle with Rob serving as an assistant to him. Though Kevin is skeptical, Tywin vouches for him as a promising tactician. After Rob constructs a raiding strategy utilizing the terrain in the Westerlands, specifically around Ashark as a way to corral them using narrow passage. If they can catch the enemy between Ashark and the Golden Tooth, using the passage on the King's Road as a funnel, the enemy won't have the ability to use their numbers to overwhelm the Westerman. Before they can depart, Rob has the eaglebonded skin changer to scout the area, verifying that Stannis is coming down through the Golden Tooth. When they see the army, it's significantly smaller than it should be. When Tywin finds that out, he immediately has them scout the area around Deep Den. They immediately have to rethink their strategy after finding that 40,000 of the Baratheon army is coming down through Deep Den, supported by 10,000 Dornish men coming close. Tywin's old sins are coming back to haunt him as the Red Viper rides with the Dornish. With this new development, they have to split their forces or allow the enemy to march on Castelli Rock. But how they split up is up for debate. In the end, Jon suggests a strategy that he learned from the Wildlings. They can use the cliffs and hills surrounding the road as elevated positions to ambush their army. While they're in the line of march, fast-moving cavalry attacks and raiders can also make life miserable for the forces there. Rob volunteers for this since he believes he can manage the enemy from the northern cavalry. 6,000 Westermen and 6,000 wildlings with half of the wars and skin changers to act as scouts. Tywin agrees and takes the remaining 50,000 mix of western and wildlings with Jon North toward the Golden Tooth with 10,000 Westermen to defend the rock. Before they leave, Marcela goes up to Jon and hands him a small scarf. >> A prince should wear his lady's favor into battle. It should bring you luck, I hope. >> I'll wear it with pride, my lady. I mean to come back. Don't worry. >> Please do. I'd rather not be a widow before I'm even married. >> At a rapid pace, two forces march toward their respective foes. When Rob arrives and assembles his men at a narrow point in the mountains, he finds that the enemy is commanded by Stannis himself. Before battle lines are drawn, Stannis rides up under a flag of truce. Rob Stark, I'm surprised to find you here defending Tywin Lannister's home. Not what I was expecting to do a few months ago, either. And you do not have to strike your banners. and join me. Renounce this ranger from the north and his ridiculous claim. And I'll let him go home to the wall while you return to Winterfell with your army intact. You don't know northerners. We don't sell out our own. You're outnumbered four to one, boy. Do you actually think you can face me on the field? I do. Wolves always bring down stags. Fine. You've chosen death. The next morning, Stannis attacks with his cavalry, but Rob's line of infantry holds the line. As Stannis commits more troops, the northern cavalry come out of the hills and starts harassing the lines, causing the Baratheon lines to flounder as they have to fight multiple opponents at once. Rob's archers on the cliff also start pelting the Baratheians with arrow fire, causing more chaos. However, once Stannis sees Rob's tactics, he adjusts on the fly, sending his heavy cavalry after the northern cavalry and forcing them to retreat rather than be overrun. They attempt to pursue only to be halted by arrow fire. As the battle starts stretching on, Stannis attempts to find ways to flank the Stark force and get around them. But whenever he sends scouts, they don't come back. It's as if he knows where I'm going before I go. >> Perhaps he is using powers from the north. >> Skin changes in wargs. How do I combat that? >> I [snorts] can provide another son, my king. If I can deal with him the same as Renley, then the battle will tilt. However, what they don't know is that one of the wildlings is controlling an owl close to Stannis's tent. When Rob finds out about the plan to kill him, he decides to act. At the moment of twilight between day and night, Rob and a few wildlings sneak through the elevated hills using bridges to get across the gaps between them. Once they're within striking distance of the camp, they lower themselves down on ropes and have a pair of wolves kill the guards on the flank and slip through the tents. At a signal, a pair of eagles fly over Stannis's camp and drop torches in their supply carts. In moments, Stannis's troops are in chaos trying to put fires out. Carefully, Rob and the others slip through the tents until he finds Melisandre. She's in the middle of summoning the shadow assassin when his wildlings grab her and put a knife through her throat. The red woman dies without a sound. Rob and the others slip through the chaos, but a wildling brings him some information. After a quick assessment, Rob discovers that Marjgery is inside. Sensing the opportunity, Rob cuts open the back of the tent and slips in. My lady, I'm Rob Stark. I'm here to rescue you. >> You're shorter than I expected, but I suppose I can work with it. >> In the chaos, Rob and his raiders escape with Marjorie and ride back to their camp. When the morning comes, the Reachmen find that Marjorie has been taken by Rob in mutiny against Stannis. As soon as the Reachmen start attacking, Rob Stark sends in the mountain and a group of expendable western against the Dornish. Seeing his enemy, Oberin charges in with his light cavalry. In a black fury, Oberin and Gregor clash. Despite the Dornishman's speed, Gregor cuts Oberin down, only to be swarmed and killed by the Dornishmen. Enraged by the death of the pair, they overwhelm the Westermen and push forward. However, with the Dornish splitting away from the main army that opens a gap and allows Rob [music] to ride right through where Stannis is. Before Stannis can attempt to rally his men and retreat, Grey Wind is on him, tearing out his throat. Once the king falls, Rob [music] stands victorious with the Reachmen joining him while the Dornish depart. >> Take the night to rest, but on the tomorrow we ride. On the field at Ashark, another battle is about to be joined. However, before hostilities, Randall Tarly faces Tywin and Jon. So, this is the bastard I've heard so much about. This is John Targaryen, son of Rhaegar and Lyanna. You owe him your allegiance. >> Randall spits to the side. Even if this bastard was Rhaegar's welp, he's the last of a ragged house that lost all claims to the throne. Lord Tarly, I know your son well. Well, I would expect him to associate with the likes of you. He told me about what you plan to do to him if he joined the watch. I think it's only right that he should take your place at Horn Hill and you take his on the wall. Are you threatening me, bastard? No, just musing. Why don't we settle this the old way? You against me? Our armies are evenly matched. Why not make this simple? Much as it would please me to spill your blood on the ground, bastard. I'm not apt to believe any promises made by the old lion. Not after what happened with the reigns in Tarbex and reneggging on his deal with King Stenis. Tywin glares at his foe, seeing entirely the man who had who he had been brutal, uncompromising, unable to feel. Surrender, Lord Tarly, or we'll destroy you root and stem. No, I would. No. I've bet the future of my house on this. If I surrender, then the Tyrell Banamin will tear me apart. My position is secure with the Tyrell lads in King's Landing and Margery with King Stenis. It's battle or surrender. Choose now. >> Fine. Battle it is. Very well. You and your bastard. I'll find you on the field and I'll show you that no wolf can match a hunter. The fields outside of Ashmark rapidly devolve into a chaotic mess as the Westerman clash with the Reach and Stormlanders. Stormlander archers loose into Westerman shields and armor, men and horses smashing into each other. And all the while, Randall Tarly orchestrates the battle like a master sas player. Whenever an opening appears, he sends men in. After an hour of continuous bloodshed, Jon decides to risk a deadly strategy. After surveying the battlefield with his raven, Tywin tries to prevent Jon from his plan where he hears it, saying he's too valuable. But Jon has a plan. As a gap opens in the Wildlink ranks as they retreat, Tarly sees the opening and charges with his cavalry. However, soon as he pushes through, the reserves bearing Jon's personal standard of white wolf on black charge forward. Growling, Lord Tarly draws Harts Bane and [music] charges toward the prince. In the middle of the field, the White Wolf and the Red Huntsman meet. Heartsbane and Longclaw smashing against each other. As the young prince and the grizzled warrior battle, horns begin to blare from behind the Tarly line. Tarly looks around, seeing that not just the direwolf, but the golden rose of Tyrell are arrayed against them. Damn you, bastard. With that, he presses his advantage, battering Jon backward. By a hair, Jon blocks each attack of the heavy greatsword until finally Tarly overextends. Jon flicks his sword, knocking Hartbane aside, and he brings his sword down on Tarly's arm. Randall Tarly's hand falls to the ground right before the man himself. With their commander dead, Rob's Northmen having Marjorie, the reachman under Tarly, quickly defeated while the Stormlander surrender. Tywin and Jon walk the battlefield, surveying the carnage for the last few hours. Your risk paid off and you killed the enemy commander. You're going to be written about in the history books. I just wanted to win. I remembered Robert and the Trident. Smart. I'm proud of your tower. I've been thinking. You don't have to go to the wall. You've proven yourself. If you wish, I'll name your handed the king after I'm crowned. I'm flattered, John. But I will decline. I gave my word to your father that I would take the black for what I've done. Myself and my son. Besides, I've seen what's coming, and a strong leader will need to be there when the army of the dead comes. Besides, I know that Led Stark will be a good hand, Tower. >> No, John. Just take care of my granddaughter. Treat her well and let me know when you two have a child. What about a compromise? Until our first child is born, you serve his hand while Jaime goes to the wall. Then I can ask my father. >> Tywin slowly bows to the young man who reminds him of the best parts of Rhaegar [music] and Ned. As you wish, your grace. I will serve as your hand to the birth of your children, which may be a long time. I know. Let's get to work. There's one thing, one last act that I must make amends for. I can only hope it is not too late. Tyrion is surprised when Tywin asks to meet with him. The old lion looks uncomfortable, even guilty as he enters and takes a seat. Tyrion taps his thumbs together expectantly. Well, we've won. Your hand of the king again. Yes. And now someone has to take Castasterly Rock and continue the line. That person is you. Me? Yes. You're my son. And I've done you many wrongs. I should have been a father to you. Well, I'm flattered. But who do you intend to have me buried to continue the line? You're already married, and I know where she is. But you. I lied. She loved you. She's with Kevin's household. I didn't want anyone to challenge Kevin's claim. You? You. I've already told Kevin to bring her back. She's been treated well, but perhaps this can make amends. Never return to the rock, father. I never want to see you again. And you will never touch Tasha again. Tywin is saddened to see that he cannot make amends with his son. But at least he's done what Ned Stark would have done. He's made it right. The procession into King's Landing rides under the dead body of Littlefinger. Tywin pauses to look up at his enemy. Dead, but not at his own hand like he wanted. Instead, Littlefinger's ambition had brought him low. Sighing, he rides through the king's gate at Jon's side, while Myrrcella is on the other. Behind them, Rob and Marjorie, the war hero and the one-time queen. At midday, Jon is crowned in the Sept of Bor with the crown of Mar from the vaults of the Red Keep, while Mosella receives the ancient crown of the rock. For the next few years, the White Wolf and the Old Lion work to repair the damage done by Littlefinger in the war. With Littlefinger's assets seized and turned [music] into crown revenues, they are able to pay off the Iron Bank. Tyrion takes up rulership of the Rock while Tywin is gone, preparing Tommen to rule the Westerlands until he comes of age. The wildlings are given places to settle across the Seven [music] Kingdoms. Mance taking a seat on the small council as the representative of the free folk. Jon and Marcela's love slowly grows, and soon they welcome a pair of twins, Tywin and Eddard. Tywin takes a moment to hold his great-grandchildren, as does Jaime, who's come down from the wall to bring his father north by ship. With tears in his eyes, Tywin prepares to depart for the wall. Both his granddaughter and her husband are there to see him off while Rob comes to replace Tywin as hand with his wife, Marjorie. He bids one last farewell to them as his granddaughter starts to weep. Farewell, my dear. I will come to visit. I'll get to know my great grandchildren, and may you have many more. >> Jon clasps Tywin's hand. Thank you for all you've done and what you will do. >> As Tywin sails away from the docks, he watches the two people he's grown to see as his children get smaller and smaller. At the wall, first Ranger Tywin and Lord [music] Commander Jaime look over the frozen north, each holding a cup of heated wine from a brazer. Do you think this will be the night? I don't know, but the cold is deeper today than it has been. >> Further down the wall, three horn blasts blow. Tywin and Jaime both look at each other and run to where the horn blast came from. Instead of an assault, the army of the dead stands out of bow range from the wall. Jaime is about to call for the watch to form up, but Tywin raises his hand. >> No, I have an idea, father. >> When I looked into the eyes of the white walker, it had intelligence about it. I want to see if they can be reasoned with. >> Despite protests, Tywin walks out into the tundra alone, facing [music] the White Walkers. He remembers Blood Raven's prophecy of him standing before the Army of the Dead alone. >> Is there anyone here who can understand my speech? >> Slowly, the army of the dead parts to reveal a figure with white skin and frosted [music] hair. >> I'm here because our sacrifices have not been honored. Crara, I know. >> Yes, that was the pact, and humanity is not honoring it. >> They're children who are born of the first night in the north. What about a compromise? >> What do you wish to offer? >> Myself in exchange for a thousand years of peace. >> The corpse queen looks at him with consideration, then reaches out and touches Tywin's face. Instantly, a cold washes over Tywin, and his eyes change from green to bright blue. But at the same time, he feels like the weight of his age is washed away. Standing straight, he looks up at the wall, meeting Jaime<unk>'s horrified eyes. Jaime stares down at Tywin as he walks into the forest beyond with the army of the dead behind him. Word rapidly spreads of Tywin leaving with the White Walkers, and the Seven Kingdoms can only speculate about what will come next. No walkers are cited again, so the deal he made may have been honored. And with that, Tywin Lannister vanishes from the histories of the seven kingdoms and into legend. That's our theory.
