The night [music] is dark and full of theories. [music] What if Robert discovered Cersei's incest himself? Let's explore the depths of it in the video. Robert growls as he looks over at his family, tapping absent-mindedly on the arm of his seat as he sweeps his gaze from left to right. On one side is Stannis Baratheon and his daughter. His brother remains stoned-faced, but his jaw is set and his eyes unusually heated. Hiding behind his arms is his daughter Shireen. The girl's face was made even more difficult to look at as her face was stre with tears. She looks over at them and sniffles as Stannis's hand moves to wipe the tears from her grayscale face. On the other side are Cersei and Joffrey. His wife simply rolls her eyes and seems bored by the situation, wanting nothing more than for this to be over with. And then there's Joffrey. The prince actually looks insulted that he has to spend time on this matter and simply rolls his eyes when Stannis levels an accusing gaze at him. So I ask you one more time, what is the meaning of this? >> I apologize, my husband. Such matters are beneath our attention. An argument between children, nothing more. >> You know the meaning of this, brother. It is the same thing that brought you here before. Your son has refused to leave my daughter alone. He bothers her during lessons, calls her deformed and a stonewoman, and now suggests we send her off to the ruins of Valeria to spend time with her own kind. >> An empty promise. My son would never go through with that and neither will you. >> And does that make it any better? >> Enough. I wasn't speaking to either of you. Joffrey. Shireen. Is [clears throat] what they said true? >> What? Well, your grace. Yes. I was leaving my sessions with Maester Crescent when I ran into Joffrey and bumped into him and he got upset and began to yell at me. >> I I told her she should be more mindful where she is going and that she should be lucky she is a princess. other people of her illness [music] would have been sent away. It is what is always said about those with grayscale. Father, even you said that sometimes it is better to put others out of their misery instead of having them >> enough. I've heard enough. >> Damn it, boy. I was speaking of horses and dogs. I'm assuming you said as much to your cousin. >> Well, yes, I did. Why in the seven hells would you think that I was speaking of another person, much less your cousin? For all the other foolish things you've said and done, I would have at least believe you understood the value of family. >> Your grace, Prince Joffrey has always been respectful towards his kin. >> Your kin. Tell me, are you so eager to embrace a lion that you have forgotten which symbol your father wears? You'd best think long and hard, boy. The last thing I would ever want is to let a lion sit on the throne. Cersei's face darkens and Joffrey's blanches. Both stare at the king unable to speak, yet they are furious. Meanwhile, for the first time, there is a glimmer of approval in Stannis's face. Finally, Robert announces that he has had enough and commands Joffrey to apologize to Shireen. The prince does so very grudgingly and through gritted teeth, but that is all they will get out of him. Finally, he dismisses the boy with a wave of his hand, but as he looks over at the boy, he sees something he had not seen before. He meant what he said about not allowing allowing lions near the throne. As Robert stares at him, Joffrey's lion features feel more and more prominent. The same slight build as his mother, the same green eyes and fair hair. He is the spitting image of a Lannister, both physically and mentally. And then there is Shireen. Though the girl seems afraid, she forces her chin up to meet Robert's gaze. She has the same square jaw as him and the same cold black hair. Even with the grayscale, [music] there might have been some who might have actually mistaken her for his daughter. When he glances back to see him staring at them, they hesitate, wondering what it might mean. What are you all waiting for? A kiss on the lips. Go. >> Cersei and Joffrey leave, and Stannis guides Shireen out, but the thought lingers in Robert's mind. It remains in place when he has dinner with the rest of his children. None of them are as insufferable as Joffrey, but there is also no denying their physical similarities with the Lannisters. In fact, he sees very little of them within him. While part of this can be explained that Cersei kept them away from him as much as possible, it feels more than that, that he does not even have a connection with them. And though he tries to dismiss them as nothing more than paranoia, they do not leave him and he expresses those fears to John Aaron. The hand rubs his chin and glances at him, he must admit the possibility has crossed his mind. And then something else comes to his mind. Maya and Edric, your children, they are your spitting image. But these children, they might as well be strangers. Could it be that the Lannister seed is so strong? It may be, but perhaps there could be something more, though I dare not consider it. Are you meaning to imply that my wife is cheating on me? I am implying nothing of the sort, your grace. I merely raise the possibility that not everything is what it would seem, but it would not suggest anything I have no proof of. What I'm implying is that we should look closer into it. An investigation. I to get the truth. This could affect succession if it is true. Therefore, as your hand, it is my duty to look into this. Not alone. I will help you however I can. I do not like the smell of this. Very well. We can start with the list of all the women you have visited in the city. >> Seven hells. Okay, we're going to be here a while, so get ready. >> The coming weeks are spent investigating these claims. When they do not need to hold court, Robert and John Aaron spend their time traveling through the city, visiting the women whom Robert has visited during his reign. There were dozens of them, and several of them are either pregnant or already with children. There were blonde women, dark-haired ones, redheads, and brunettes. And yet all of them with children bore whailing infants with dark hair. While some might not have had Robert's blue eyes, they had the hair. Each time they see one of these children, a knot in Robert's stomach tightens. The oldest of them, even older than Joffrey, and they looked even less like the royal prince. The older children were usually robust and tall. That includes a Smith's apprentice named Gendry, who looks like a younger version of Robert, according to John Aaron. Those outside the city are secretly contacted and asked to give a description of their children in exchange for some money. These are no different, being the same blackhaired beauties that had been seen in the capital. When John Aaron isn't examining Robert's bastards, he is pouring through the ancient documents that outline the genealogies of House Lannister and Baratheon. The trends soon become clear to him. In almost all cases of Baratheon marriages, the resulting children would have dark hair. The trait is so strong that it was even able to overpower the Valyrian features of the Targaryenss, such as the case of Rainees Targaryen and Robert himself. Meanwhile, the golden hair of the Lannisters was not so common. While many of their children do have it, intermaring with other houses, sometimes their features overpower the golden hair and green eyes common among the rulers of Casterly Rock. One such example is Cleo's Frey, who bears a far greater resemblance to his Frey side than Jenna Lannister. All of this evidence slowly piles up and leaves the conclusion clearer. Joffrey and his other children are not his. And that means that Cersei had been cheating on him. Bloody lions. Do they think they can steal the throne from me? I think not. I'm going to make that turn club [ __ ] pay. No man or woman makes a fool out of me. Your grace, you best temper yourself. I understand your frustration, and there must be a price to pay. But please be careful. Do not say anything that might be used against you, and do not let your emotions get the better of you. We must proceed carefully, lest we have a war on our hands. My wife has been cheating on me, making a fool out of me for the last 13 years, and now you say I'm not to make a fool of myself. We have passed that point again. I understand. But she will not see things that way and may use it against you. Do not forget that you have not been faithful to your wedding bed as well. And just what are you trying to say? I am saying that we are in a delicate situation, your grace. Whatever you say now can be used right against you. And Cersei may even claim you are saying such things because you are trying to cover up your infidelity. We have proof. All the evidence we've gathered will not convince anyone. Robert, we have bastard children and old genealogies. Those will not convince high lords of anything. They will see them as nothing more than old documents. And for good reason, because we have nothing truly proving infidelity. So what is the point of this? So that we know the truth. But that is only the first step. What we know and what the realm is willing to believe are two separate things. What we need is evidence that Cersei has been lying to you. >> To that end, John, Aaron, and Robert decide to gather more allies in Robert's brothers. Neither Stannis nor Renley has ever liked the Lannisters and is more than happy to see them gone. Renley is excited at the idea of being able to push for Robert to take a second wife, while Stannis wants to remove their influence from court and reform the realm. Both agree to do what they can to learn more about it. Servants are interrogated and spies are placed to watch them. But the Lannisters are being unusually tidy about this. In fact, it is one of the few things where Cersei puts considerable effort into hiding. She does not even trust her personal guards with this secret. The servants Renley bribes come up with nothing. While Stannis tries to interrogate the king's guard, but finds that they lack as much knowledge as he. Seeing their struggles, the two changed tactics and decide to go after the one person Cersei might trust with information like this. Jaime. The two of them order the king's guard to the tower of the hand one night while the rest of the castle sleeps. They tell no one save Barristan and give orders that they are not to be disturbed. As Jaime takes his seat, the two brothers sit across the table, their arms folded and their faces grim in the orange candle light. So, what reason do my two good brothers have to drag me out of bed in the middle of the night? If anyone sees us, they might talk. Oh, they are talking, but just not about us. There are some troubling rumors about your sister, and you can help correct them. We have information that she has been visiting another lover and we would like to know if you have any knowledge of this. Me? If the queen were having an affair, what would make you think I would know about it? Because you just so happen to be the queen's brother in sworn sword. If there was anyone who could help her hide it, it would be you. And I would think that the point of an affair would be to prevent anyone from knowing about it. Besides, I'm not her only sworn sword, but I am one of Robert's king's guard. My day is mostly spent standing by his bed chamber while our king eats and drinks and shits and [ __ ] Come now, you expect us to believe you are so loyal to Robert that you would neglect watching over your own blood? I don't think so. Well, regardless of what you might think, I have no answers for you. Though, I do have some advice. There are some troubling rumors. Oh, I know the rumors about me. They are not nearly as troubling as some might believe. Don't worry about that. However, if you are not able to provide us with any information, we will have no choice but to send you to the wall. The the wall? And just for what reason will I be sent there? Disloyalty, treason, king slaying, any matter of crimes. You have served here for almost 15 years, and I'm certain the king can find some slight that will have you sent there. And to be honest, you will not be missed by many. Not by either of us. A small council, not even by Sir Barristan. And what of my sister? Do you think she will just accept that? Or my father? All his life, he has wanted nothing more than for me to be back in Castasterly Rock. If he hears you would send me to Castle Black, it would be war. It would. But you wouldn't be fighting it. And that would still be a victory for us. Not to mention who will join the Lannisters. Your father has no shortage of enemies. And then what happens? Do you know what will follow? We will organize a full investigation into these rumors. Your sister will have to be detained, of course. And if evidence is found, well, our king has never been known for taking betrayal. Well, so is that the king's justice that I have heard so much about? Arresting those who don't agree with him, no different than Lannister justice. I am sure Elliot Martell would be smiling down from heaven when she sees it. Besides, it is not as if Robert wasn't looking for any excuse to get rid of her at this point. Of course, while he will be the one to dismiss her, it would be your inaction that seals her fate and your decision to speak up that can save her. Jaime squares his shoulders, but the two men reached for their swords. They had made sure that the king's slayer came unarmed, but they had their weapons ready. However, they do not cut him down and instead call for him to be sent to the dungeons. Jaime is [music] sent to the black cells, and when Sir Barristan wakes up, he's informed that his charge will not be able to fulfill his duties. Every day, one of the Baratheon brothers will visit him, urging him to confess his crimes. He is promised mercy, but Jaime refuses to cooperate. Even when Robert arrives and orders him to admit what he's done, he refuses. Even as the king threatens to have him drawn and quartered. Finally, after a frustrating day, Robert leaves, cursing Jaime and promising to punish him once he gets the chance. But as he departs, another figure appears. He does not approach through the door, but instead from the shadows, almost as if materializing from the walls. The king slayer has no idea where he came from, but he has little time to dwell on it now as the spider smiles. You have been most uncooperative, king slayer, but I can offer you a chance to satisfy your demands. However, you must do exactly as I say. The next day, when Renley comes for his turn to interrogate Jaime, the king slayer announces that he is ready to confess. When he does, Robert is brought before them to listen to his words. But what Jaime says goes far beyond what any of them were expecting. They thought that he might have helped Cersei sneak around, perhaps cover up for her. But instead, they are shocked to hear that Jaime was the very man that Cersei was having relations with. He takes a small pleasure in seeing all three Baratheon's faces go slack as they try to make sense of this, their jaws fall open as they stare at him, but then Robert grabs Jaime by the tunic and lifts him off the ground, his eyes gleaming dangerously as he regards the knight. You would be wise not to take me as a fool, King Slayer. Deceiving your king is a crime punishable by death. And if I find that you are lying, it would be for nothing. Do you take me as a liar? >> I do. Then you are a fool. I've done many things, but I've never lied to you, your grace. Not anymore than you've lied to my sister. Roaring, Robert throws the king's guard aside and shouts for his brothers and calls for Cersei's arrest. He wants to shout for her execution, but John Aaron urges against this. They must get Cersei's confession as well to ensure that no one will dare rise against them. This only agitates Robert further, but he has little choice in this matter. Instead, he calls for Stannis, Renley, and John Aaron to rally all their men, as well as sending word for the Goldcolaks. As the castle begins to wake, they find the Red Keep swarming with the city watch. Hundreds of them enter the halls on the orders of King Robert himself. They are joined by Baratheon and Aaron men at arms, knights, and other retainers. The few Lannister men at arms are quickly surrounded and either cut down or forced to surrender. The queen is apprehended as she heads down for breakfast while the hound tries to barricade Joffrey in his room as he fights off at the attackers. He manages to kill four gold cloaks and two knights before being wrestled to the ground and [music] the prince is apprehended. The rest of the court is locked in their chambers. Not that they would dare come out with all the commotion. For the next few hours, no one knows what's going on. They can only sit in their chambers and whisper to each other, speculating what is happening. The king visits his wife and tells her everything. He says that he knows what she has done and that Jaime has confessed to all their affairs. Because of that, he will execute her. But if she is to confess her crimes, then he will have Sir Illen Payne do it. If she tries to deny it and draw out this affair, then he will be forced to have her drawn and quartered with her body parts hanging from various gates of the King's Landing. Cersei fumes, but sees nothing that she can do. Not when Jaime has already confessed to the crimes, so she has no choice but to confess. Later that day, she is brought before the court, her hands chained, but her head held high as she refuses to humble herself, even for Robert. She finds her husband sitting in the Iron Throne and looking at her expectantly. Taking a deep breath, she looks over at them. >> I understand that there have been no accusations levied against me regarding my relationship with another man. I am here to say that those rumors are true. I have not been faithful to my husband and instead sought the company of others. I do not ask for mercy for myself, only that my husband provide consideration towards my children. >> Robert watches all of this and scoffs, dismissing Cersei's words as an attempt at manipulation. He makes no such promises for mercy and sends Cersei back to the dungeons for execution in the morning. Yet, she never reaches them. Instead, various strikes as he has his spies ambush the gold cloaks escorting her and has them spirited away to his waiting ship. There, Jaime is waiting for them as they sail across the narrow sea. When Robert hears about this, he is furious and orders a kingdomwide search for them. Yet, whatever else, the truth is out there, and now everyone is aware that Joffrey and his siblings are not a part of the line of succession. In fact, Joffrey is sent to the wall while Tommen and Marcela are placed under Baratheon custody. Tywin is furious, unsurprisingly, and angrily berates But Robert in a flurry of letters regarding his treatment of his children and questions the validity of such claims. However, he is alone in this matter. The other great houses are reluctant to back him. Some, like the Tyrells, see the opportunity to expand their influence and allow this to happen. Others, like the Starks and Martell, never like the Lannisters and are keen on seeing their influence curbed. Though he threatens punishment without any other houses rising up in support, he must slink back to Casterly Rock and brood over everything that has happened. Yet things do not go the way conspirators wanted either. With Cersei gone, Renley was hoping to seize the chance and push for Robert to wed Marjorie Tyrell in order to cement an alliance with High Garden. However, after the chaos of his first marriage, Robert is not interested in a second one. He refuses to marry Marjgery, or any woman for that matter, preferring simply to spend his days brooding over what was lost. And then there is Stannis. Without Joffrey, the topic of succession comes up. Stannis points out that this means he is now the legal heir, though Robert points out that any children he has can also be a claimant, and he has not ruled out the idea of legitimizing one. This is due to his desire not to have to marry again and to select an [music] heir. In that regard, he orders that Edric Storm be sent back to King's Landing so that he may be legitimized and named heir. The boy is eager to meet with his father, the man he had idolized and believed to have given him such gifts in his name day or answered his letters. In truth, that was Renley and Varys who did that. When Edric arrived, he was shocked to see the king barely recognize him and even less eager to talk. He is a mess of a man with bloodshot eyes and a slump in his shoulders. He offers a few courteous words, but then sends him on his way to learn from John Aaron. In the king's eyes, he is named his heir and placed him in the care of his tutors. His job is done. Edric soon finds himself in the care of Maester Crescent and John Aaron, both of whom are won over by his charm. They remind him of the king in his youth. Back then, he was full of life with fire in his eyes that has long since dimmed. While Edric is placed under their care, efforts are made to reorganize the court. Now that Cersei and Jaime are gone, Lannister influence is broken. Many of their alliances abandon them, and their households are either recruited by other houses or go into hiding. Diplomatically, Tywin is virtually isolated. However, none of this revitalizes the king, who was never interested in ruling. Instead, the king simply throws himself into drink and hunting, continuing his downward spiral. The young prince watches all of this and feels the faith in his father shaken as he sees the man he once idolized. In his place, a shell of a man simply waiting for the end to come. The sight is shocking and leaves him disappointed. And while he remains heir, he begins to question whether it is something he truly wants after seeing how much it weighs heavily on Robert, whom he spends much time with. Stannis takes notice of this and approaches Robert one day after their lessons are done. Your boy is learning quickly. I suppose this means that this is the end of this matter. The realm is of his heir and the Lannisters are gone, meaning you can retire in peace. >> Yes, it would appear so. But I take it you are not satisfied with that, brother. Tell me, are you upset that I did not name you heir to the Iron Throne? >> I am a man of the law first and foremost. If you wish to name this boy as your heir, then I accept it. I admit that Edric shows some promise. But do you think that perhaps you are squandering that promise as he sees you like this? He spends his days with John [music] Erin and Master Crescent rather than his father. Aren't you always the one who says that I barely know how to rule? That I am a king whose hand builds before the king can think? I do, and I stand by that statement until now. However, I am still interested in ensuring the betterment of the realm, even if you are not. That is why I am here to request that Edric be placed under my care so that I may mentor him as well. >> You, I served on your small council for 15 years, and since you have not found reason to have me dismissed, I'd like to believe I did an adequate job there. So, allow me to share that experience with your son and ensure that he does not make the same mistakes as you." Robert stares at his brother. That is a bold request, and anyone else asking it might have won them a roaring reprimand, both for their words and their presumption. But something within Robert flickers, and he grunts with admission, allowing Stannis to take the responsibility, but saying that [music] he will not formally hand over Edric to him, at least not until he is certain of his path. That is enough for Stannis. And Edric, [music] now legitimized as Edric Baratheon, spends more time with his uncle, Stannis. The two of them spend their time training. While he is eager to learn about fighting with a hammer and shield, Stannis focuses on tactics and understanding the military. Where Edric wants to hunt pirates, his uncle speaks of maintaining and funding the fleet, guarding trade routes, and gathering resources for their ships. The lessons are unlike anything that the prince expects, but he studies them diligently, understanding the importance of them if he is to rule. The boy also becomes a constant companion to [music] Shireen and the remaining Lannister children, who were spared execution due to their age. Instead, the pair is kept as hostages for Tywin's good behavior. In contrast to Joffrey, Edric proves to be kind, gallant, and charming. The four of them become fast friends, and Stannis watches all of this with growing approval. Renley even suggests naming Loris Tyrell as his protector, helping ensure close Tyrell ties and suggesting Marjorie as a part of their marriage pact. However, they aren't the only ones watching them. Robert continues to watch his sons progress from afar. He sees how much Edric absorbs these lessons and begins to grow not just as a boy, but as a future prince, a ruler whom the realm can take pride in. He is proud of what he sees, but at the same time, he remains unwilling to approach him and take charge of the lessons. In many ways, Edric is the very prince that Robert always wanted. A smart ruler, a promising warrior, and a charming diplomat. The problem is it came many years too late, and the king struggles to find it in himself to help raise him. Not after seeing his catastrophic failures with Joffrey. His brothers do not notice. They're too busy focusing on Edric. But one person does and she approaches Robert one day while he is in the gardens drinking wine. >> Prince Edric is becoming quite popular with everyone. They think of him as a great prince. >> I have seen the way everyone fawns over him. It was the way people used to do for me. I'm glad that he's adjusting well. Your father and Lord Renley are teaching him well. I bet everyone is saying he's quite charming >> and smart as well. >> Tell me, is he giving you any problems like Joffrey did? >> No, he's very kind to me, too. >> That's good. I'd hate to have to discipline him, but I very much doubt I have to. He may become the prince that everyone wants and the king that I [clears throat] never was. >> Why do you say that, Uncle? >> Look around, child. What have I done that the realm will remember me for? >> You protected me when Joffrey was cruel to me. That's something. [sighs] >> I I suppose I did that. >> You defended me when no one else would. Isn't that what a good king does? And you helped learn the truth about Cersei and Jaime. Isn't that something, too? [sighs] >> I [clears throat] I helped fix the great mess that was left over because of me. My father always says that making a mistake isn't foolish, but refusing to clean it up is. [clears throat] >> That does sound like something Stannis would say. Thank you, Manise. I needed to hear that. >> I don't know how the realm will remember you, but you will always be a good king to me. And Edric, I think. >> Yes. Well, he doesn't need me for that. >> He doesn't need you, but he wants you to be there. He always speaks so much of you. I don't think the crown matters as much as having you with him during this time. >> Shireen smiles and the two of them sit there alone watching the sunset from the garden. Robert glances at his goblet and lifts it up. But before it can touch his lips, he sets it down. For the first time, he does not feel the need to drink and simply is happy being there. Meanwhile, across the narrow sea, the Lannister siblings remain in exile, watching events in the Seven Kingdoms unfold. They are comfortable. It is not thanks to their father. After hearing of the situation, supporting his children, even from a distance, is risky and threatens to bring the Baratheon wrath upon the entire Westerlands. While he sends what he can, this is limited and barely enough to buy them a house and provisions. Their true patron is none other than Yo Mopantis, who provides them with shelter in his own home and feeds them from his own pocket. The coin that their father sends is instead used to maintain their own lifestyle. He claims he does this due to his long trading history with the Lannisters in the Seven Kingdoms. In reality, it is because of his ambitions to play Kingmaker. And once they're secure and isolated, he reveals his plan to them. He starts by saying how Aegon Targaryen had actually survived the sacking of King's Landing and was smuggled out by Varys. Cersei responds with disbelief, claiming it is all a hoax, but Jaime is intrigued. More than that, he almost appears desperate for it to be true. Yo smiles and sees this reaction and spots a potential weakness. That cannot be. I saw his body along with his sister and mother. My father saw to it that none of them would survive in order to ensure a smooth transition of power. Yes, we were certain that Tywin would have attempted something like that. It was brutal business and I understand your misgivings, but that is precisely why this plan was made to ensure that a Targaryen would survive. >> And who is this? We >> my conspirator. You know him as the spider. Lord Varys has been a trusted colleague of mine for many years, but his loyalty is to the old dynasty as it always has been. I see. So why is it that you are trusting us now? My father helped overthrow the dynasty you served. I Your father did, but that was done out of pragmatism rather than true hatred for the Targaryenss. Varys also speaks of how your father had served Aries dutifully for many years. Yet, it was the mad king turned his back on him. However, our goals have long since reconnected. And how do you figure that? Well, if Aegon is ever to reclaim his throne, then he will need allies in the seven kingdoms. And I can think of no one better than the Lannisters of Castile Rock. Your family has the wealth and influence to make all the difference. And in exchange, we can offer you an opportunity to return to the Iron Throne. >> Really now? Well, then I must hear this. >> Well, isn't it obvious? Though your son has been sent to the wall, your daughter remains in King's Landing, and she is of marriageable age. [music] If she were to wed Aegon, then that would unite the houses and secure the rule with Lannister Gold. So, you would have me play a kingmaker, magister? No, sir. I would have you help restore the dynasty that was wrongfully overthrown. Do you have misgivings? I served Robert. I swore to fight for him as one of his king's guard. As you did, King Aries, and yet that did not stop you from overthrowing him and killing him when you had to. That was different. And why is that? Are you saying that Robert is somehow a worthy king? Someone who deserves to sit on the Iron Throne any more than Rhaegar or his children? Said Jaime, I do not blame you for what you did that day. Not after everything that the Mad King had done. But surely you can see this. Is it your pride that prevents you from acting again? The fear that you will be branded a king slayer twice over. Say that again, Majest. If you think for a moment that is what was stopping me from taking action, you clearly do not know me as well as you think. But this is a game I never cared for, and one I'm not keen on playing again, much less as someone's pawn. Who said anything about being a pawn? If you are to return, it would be as the Lord Commander of his king's guard, free to do whatever you want. Tell me, do you not believe that Rhaegar's legacy is worth fighting for? A chance to scrub aside all the wrongs done by both Targaryen and Lannister. The words are honeyed and leave Jaime seriously considering them as he looks over to Cersei, who squeezes her arms and thinks of this and what it can all mean. Jaime bites his lip, his mind reminding him of all that this might entail, of the ways that he can be used as a pawn and all the ways that he had been used in the past. They remind him to be wary and to back away from [music] such a course. That was the nature of the Game of Thrones where even the most honorable intentions may be chewed up and spat out whether he likes it or not. And yet his heart doesn't think of that. All he could think of was those brutalized children of Rhaegar who he had trusted to keep safe and how he failed. Though it was Tywin who had destroyed his family, Jaime feels the blood on his hands and he shakes his head. It doesn't take much more convincing to go along with this. Soon enough, plans are made and ships are sent out. But in the Seven Kingdoms, the realm continues to heal. Many are surprised when Robert decides to take part in Stannis's lessons. At first, it makes for an odd sight to have the older man join in. But the middle Baratheon sees no reason not to have him there. What is surprising is how seriously Robert takes them. He is not just there to sit and watch. He listens not just to Stannis, but to his boy. He watches how Edric answers and addresses situations. He sees the growing confidence in the boy who acts more and more like a king with each day. The prince considers every course of action and measures his decisions with compassion and pragmatism. At first, Robert also tries to advise him using his own experience in ruling. Yet, he also finds himself learning from the boy and realizing that in some ways Edric may surpass him as a ruler. Rather than growing envious of this, the king feels pride fill his chest as he sees the heir he can be proud of. And Edric is happy to at last have the father he's wanted. While Robert is no longer the fit warrior of his youth, he still remains jovial and affectionate towards his son. The two begin to spend time beyond these lessons, sharing meals, going riding, and even sparring together. Though Robert does not say it, he longs for a time when he can become strong enough to be worthy of a match for his boy. But while they are mending their relationship, one thing escapes their notice. The sudden influx of trade to Lannisport. Ships from Pentos arrive there by the dozens, bearing exotic spices, rare cheeses, expensive dyes, and spice. Agents of Magister Yrio send word to Tywin through his trade route, allowing them to smuggle letters. He informs them of Jaime and Cersei's safety, but of his plan to help them reclaim the throne as well. While Tywin is prepared to dismiss any rumors of Aegon's return as fables, he recognizes the opportunity is real enough. More importantly, it is a chance to get his children back and put one of his grandchildren on the Iron Throne. He sends his own counter offers, not entirely dismissing the offer, but requiring conditions to be met, such as ensuring the safety of Marcela and the chance to raise allies. All of these are terms that Yo accepts, pleased as it means he no longer needs to back Viseris and Daenerys. Although he had planned on marrying the princess off to a Dothraki call, Viseris was proving to be too much of a liability and there were too many variables that could not be controlled. This plan with the Lannisters is much simpler and he decides to focus his efforts here. Soon enough, the spies expand beyond Lannisport in search of allies. They soon reach the Iron Islands, the Stepstones, and places beyond. Among those who may join them are the Greyjoys. Veilong has long despised Robert and Ned Stark and eagerly joins this alliance. Although they frame it as a partnership, it soon becomes clear that Balon is a lesser ally at best because Taiwan and Yria both begin to draw up invasion plans, simply ordering the Greyjoys to hang back and wait for the opportune time to invade. After a month of waiting, the long awaited signal begins and the war begins as well in Seagard as the Iron Fleet sets sail, eager to avenge their defeat in the coastal fortress. The castle was built to stop the Ironborn, and many expect this case to be no different. However, the difference is that the Ironborn are not acting alone. With Lannister gold discreetly transferred to them, they hire cell swords to stiffen their forces. These mercenaries boast larger vessels that leave them more than a match for the coastal fortifications. While the galleys blockade Malister forces and keep the castle under siege, the long ships bring soldiers to shore. And these Ironborn Reavers rush to storm the castle walls. Jason Mallister fights fiercely, cutting down dozens of warriors with his men at arms. They managed to hold out against the initial assault, but soon finds themselves besieged. Within a week, they at last breach the walls, and [music] the Malisters are all taken prisoner while their town is placed under the Iron Fleet's control. The defeat sends shock waves across the Riverlands as one of the strongest castles falls to the resurgent Greyjoy. In order to prevent them from advancing further, Edmir Tully calls his banners and begins moving north to stop [music] them. Word is also sent to Robert and the rest of the realm, urging them to prepare for any further Greyjoy attacks. The Royal Fleet is soon sent to support this attack and prepares for a potential invasion of the Iron Islands. This proves to be a wise decision as the Ironborn soon begin to raid the coast of the Reach and the North. With the defenses in King's Landing weakened because of that, Various manages to smuggle out the Lannister children in the dead of night. And once that is done, Tywin calls their banners. The first blow comes as the Redwin fleet is clashing with the Iron Fleet off the coast of the arbor. At first, it seems like they managed to regain the upper hand as they drive the Ironborn back. But once they reach western waters, the Lannisters strike. A gathered fleet sails out and strikes at the Redwind ships, driving them back and hitting them from behind. Seeing this, the Ironborn rally and swarm the scattering ships. By the end of the battle, dozens of the Reach's finest galleys are sent to the bottom of the ocean. The few ships that do manage to limp back to the arbor bring news of this betrayal. The Lannisters are cooperating with the Greyjoys. But before they can properly respond to the new threat, the Lannisters strike. Their army marches out from Golden Tooth and Craig Hall with the intention of overwhelming their armies. [music] And at first, things seem to be going according to plan. In the Riverlands, many of their warriors are moved to contend with the Ironborn threat. So, the lands west of the fork are left exposed, allowing the Lannisters to sweep across them. Meanwhile, in the Reach, the Ironborn continue their rampage. They strike along the coast, overwhelming the outnumbered Rudwin fleet. While they dare not confront them in an open battle, their long ships can easily land and deploy warriors to terrorize the coast before fleeing when a response arrives. All of this requires Mace to hold their soldiers back to deal with the Reavers, limiting how many men can he can send. And then there is the matter of Varys. The unic has spent years gathering secrets and information across every house. After leaving King's Landing, he now travels from house to house, reminding them of this. Blackmail and secrets are dangled in front of their lords, threatening to make secret deals, illicit affairs, and disturbing behavior public if they do not cooperate. To others, he offers the secrets of their enemies. Information that can save their lands and even opportunities to profit in the chaos if they cooperate. All he asks in exchange is that they limit the number of swords they send or consider supporting someone else. This hamstrings the number of Riverlords and Reachmen that actually answer the call to arms. So instead, it falls upon Robert to handle this threat. Word is sent to Ned Stark to meet him in the Riverlands, while John Aaron orders an army under Nester Royce to be sent to confront the Lannisters. Meanwhile, Renley meets his brothers with the Baratheon army in tow. They intend to march south and assist the Reach army before riding north and advancing into the Riverlands to assist Sir Edmure. However, as he prepares to depart, Edric approaches his father. The boy is dressed for battle, dawning armor in a miniature version of Robert's hammer. >> Father, perhaps I should also go gather the Crownlanders leveies as well and advance into the Rivals. This is where the war began, and they must see the crown has not forgotten them. [laughter] >> Eager for first blood, are we? Think you can handle things on your own? >> Yes, father. I will not let you down. And if we're lucky, we can meet up with Lord Eddard and John Aaron to crush the Lannisters and the great joys between them. It seems you've been paying attention to your strategy lessons, my prince. That seems like a sound plan. >> Indeed, it is. [snorts] All right, then. Stannis to Barristan. Escort the prince and see to it that he does not hurt himself. The two men bow, and Edric soon rides off with his personal retinue. Ravens are sent ahead, informing the crownlanders of the prince's need. Soon, detachments from Stokeworth, Hayford, Rosby, and Duskondale join his growing army and provide him with a small host. They soon advance into the Riverlands and secure Harrenhal, capturing it just as the Veilmen arrive from the north and Ned's troops help retake Seagard from the Ironborn. Yet even with this victory, Riveron itself is threatened as most of the houses west of the Red Fork are captured, leaving them to face off against the Lannister army, who try to fortify their holdings. Their forces secure the east bank and begin to dig in as they devise a way to try and cross the Red Fork. Trying to cross by sea is out of the question with the number of Ironborn ships patrolling the waters, leaving them with control of the Sunset Sea. Meanwhile, Robert and Renley march across the stormlands across the marches where some Dornish volunteers move to help them. They are supported by a flotilla of ships that support the army and prevent the Ironborn from trying to outflank them. They soon begin to sweep the coast of Ironborn raiders. Although not as strong as he once was, Robert has started to slowly get back into shape with his training with Edric. By the time he arrives on the ree coast, he can more easily swing his hammer and knock aside warriors. And when he dons his armor, he almost feels like his old self. The king even begins to laugh as he crushes men's chests. Within weeks, the Reach can breathe a sigh of relief. As with the extra ships provided by the Royal Fleet, the raiders are forced to retreat. A part of that is thanks to Sir Davos, who uses his past as a smuggler to identify hiding spots along the coast and islands to begin rooting them out. It would soon appear that they are ahead of schedule. But then the Golden Company finally arrives. They arrive by sea along the coast of undefended Stormlands. But their numbers have grown since their arrival. Thanks to Yo's influence, he's managed to gather even more allies. So, it is not 10,000 men that invade the Stormlands, but 25,000 men. When they reach the shores of Shipbreaker Bay, the Storm Lords are helpless to stop them. The forces they do have are swept aside as they advance deeper, making their way north to attack King's Landing, with Edricch taking most of the Crownlander armies away. This leaves Robert as the only one close enough to confront them. [music] Thankfully, the situation is less strained now that the royal fleet is beating back the Ironborn, allowing ships to transport the army back to the Stormlands, all while giving orders to Mace to begin making preparations to assist the Riverlands. He already sends an advanced force of 3,000 men under the command of Sir Loris to reinforce them. This proves to be a smart decision as the men struggled to cross the Red Fork. Together, Ned, John, Aaron, and Edric manage to destroy any remaining Ironborn presence in the mainland, but the Dannisters prove more stubborn. They attempt several major crossings across the Red Fork, but all of them are beaten back. Edric personally leads some of them, waving his hammer around and urging his men forward, but these efforts fail and and he even takes an arrow wound to the shoulder. However, Tywin has fortified his position well, and they cannot take more than a temporary toll hold. Because of that, a desperate plan is formulated to turn the tide. It has to be a crossing here. The ford at the millstone is too well guarded. But here, where the river bends, we can use the rafts under the cover of Lord Stark's diversion. A daring stroke, my prince, but if they discover us. Edric's heart hammers against his ribs. He thinks of his father, not the broken man he first met, but the king who now trains with him, who trusts him with an army. and he cannot let him down now. This is exactly what he would do to turn the tide, [music] and it is what he will try. As dusk settles, the signal fires bloom on the east bank with Stannis, Ned Stark, and John Aaron's forces launching a furious, noisy assault on the Lannister pickets at the main fort. The clamor of steel and war horns echoes down river. Edric hears this as his men push the crude log rafts into the current. So far things appear to be quiet, but halfway across a horn blar. Not from the diversion, but from the western [music] bank. A torch flares, then another. They have been seen. Row. It's too late. Arrows hiss out of the darkness, thutting into the rafts and the hless passengers. [music] Some are pinned in place. Soon, ballista bolts also fly, as do rocks that turn the water treacherous. Soon, the waves lap up against the rafts, and some are overturned. Edric tries to shut orders, but the cold swallows Edric whole. Water fills his mouth. His clothes drag him down. His vision grows heavy as darkness swarms over him, threatening to engulf him. But through the meer, he sees a face. Robert the king in their last conversation. He placed a hand on his shoulder and laughed, telling him that he expects Edric to make him proud. The thought is a spark in the dark, knowing that his father and the whole realm depended on him. For the first time, he feels the full responsibility of the realm on his shoulders, but he will not let it consume him as it had his father. With a desperate surge, he kicks free of his heavy cloak, breaches the surface and gasps. He sees the glint of Selmme's armor nearby, a few other heads bobbing in the chaos. They haul themselves out to the mud, weapons gone, breath ragged, but they are across, and Sir Barristan leads a counterattack against the men to stop them. They were not numerous, only about 50 soldiers, and they soon scatter once they saw the legendary knight cutting through their ranks. Edric soon joins him, swinging his hammer around as they allow more survivors to filter through. They follow the surviving Westerman toward their outpost, which is guarding the crossing of Stannis and [music] Ned. With a raw shout, Eric leads the charge. His hammer cutting down the first man. Sir Barristan is a white shadow of death beside him. They take the defenders by surprise, cutting [music] them down as Ned rallies his men and charges forward, being attacked from both sides. The outpost falls to them and they begin to cross. Urgent runners report this to Tywin, who begins sending his reserves barreling toward them as Lannister cavalry prepares to stop them. However, a new horn sounds, and from the south, reports of a contingent of reachmen arrive. [music] The advanced guard that Mace has sent soon reaches them. The Lannisters are forced to turn their attention to try and stop them. At their head, a knight in brilliant white armor cuts a path toward Edricch. Sir Loris Tyrell dispatches a Lannister horseman, then turns, offering a quick nod to the prince. With that, the crossing is cleared and the army can cross properly. This forces Tywin to retreat as holding the red fork is no longer tenable. In the Stormlands, the earth trembles as Robert advances. His Warhammer held high. He leads his forces against the Golden Company's rear guard. Renley's outr rididers have harried them for days. And [music] now in the rocky hills north of Shipbreaker Bay, the Cell Swords turn to face them once they get closer. The two armies clash in a grinding, brutal stalemate over the nearby hills. As Robert takes a position [music] there in the center, the professional discipline of the Golden Company meets the furious resilience of the Stormlanders. However, they are not prepared for a serious offensive and slowly begin to give way as John Conington orders his forces forward. And once the cracks form in their defenses, he signals for their secret weapons. Great gray shapes [music] lumber forward. Elephants, towers on their backs, smashing through the faltering shield walls. >> Cunning bastards, archers. But the uneven ground works in the Baratheon's favor. The elephants struggle to advance, and it allows his archers to take position and fire at him. A storm of arrows rains down from the stony hillside, confused in pain to the elephant's trumpet and reel, disrupting the company's advance. Seeing the moment, Robert signals his reserve cavalry. With me, the knights of the Stormlands follow their king, a wedge of steel that punches into the enemy's disrupted flank. Robert's hammer swings in great arcs, clearing [music] a path. His target is the heart of the host, the silver-haired youth bearing the three-headed dragon banner, Aegon. He is almost upon him when a flash of gold armor intercepts him. King Slayer, your grace. They circle. Two legends in the dust rush at each other, weapons flashing. Jaime is faster, his skill undimemed. He faints and lands a shallow cut across Robert's thigh. The king staggers, but doesn't fall. [music] Robert brings his hammer down, but Jaime dances aside. When his sword lashes out, the king barely checks it with his hammers halfed. He pushes it aside and tries to jab the spike of his hammer at the knight. Yet, he slides away and clashes his sword and shield together. The two of them advance on each other again, their weapons flashing again. Though stronger than before, he still struggles to keep up with Jaime, who practically dances around him. His shield bats aside Robert's hammer. All the while, that wound on his leg slows him down. Seeing himself stumbling, Robert roars and rushes forward, aiming to try and cut him down. But Jaime ducks low against the hammer and slashes his sword against his [music] body. It manages to rip through his battered armor and sinks into him. The king groans and falls to one knee, but he manages to look up. >> You were always the better swordsman, but this this isn't about skill, is it? >> You were a foolish king, and I kill foolish kings if you forgot. especially ones who harm my family. How could I? After reminding you of all those years and tell me, is that why you were doing this? For your family? It is for Rhaegar's destiny. He is birthright. You were never meant to sit the Iron Throne, but now I have the chance to put his son on the throne. And your family, it would seem. Tarwin Lannister just happens to get something out of this, I'm sure. >> The words hit him, and Jaime waivers. Of course, his father got something from helping them. [music] He wouldn't risk backing them if he didn't. For a split second, he sees the blood on his hands again, the little bodies and crimson cloaks, his father's cold satisfaction. He sees Tywin's minations in every move amid this invasion. Is it that ambition you wish back after talking about avenging this wrong? You don't know anything. I know Tywin Lannister murdered Rhaegar's children. I know he did that to benefit himself. And he'd do it again. He would. Just tell me who would actually back him or are you prepared to fight across the entire seven kingdoms? A great crash echoes as Renley's forces led by the Knights of Storm's End finally rupture the Golden Company's right wing. The Cells Swords line begin to buckle. Jaime looks past Robert to Aegon, who's shouting orders. A boy playing at conquest. Jaime knows what that would mean. Constant war. Thousands dead, maybe even more than those he saved in King's Landing. He looks back at Robert, who is fighting for a son, for a realm he's finally trying to mend for the first time. Looking like the king worthy of service. Duty, honor, oaths. They are the tangled [music] knot in his chest. With a final, almost weary glance at Aegon, Jaime Lannister does not call his men to reinforce the breaking flank. Instead, he lowers his sword, takes a step back from the king, and turns. He melts into the chaos, heading not for the heart of battle, but toward the coast. Robert lets him go. A smile grips his lips as he collapses to the ground. Aegon, abandoned by his protector, is surrounded and dragged from his saddle by Baratheon men at arms. Not far from him, Cersei Lannister, who had refused to flee the field, is captured, shrieking curses as she refused Jaime<unk>s offer to flee. Soon, they are brought before Edric with news that Robert Baratheon had fallen in battle, with a smile on his lips as he knows that the kingdom he will leave his son is stable. The new king hears this with tears in his eyes. His first act as king is to execute Cersei and Tywin. Aegon is given a chance to surrender his claim, but he refuses and soon follows. Yet Jaime is not found. Instead of fleeing across the narrow sea with his children, though he has a heavy heart, he at least takes soloulless in seeing his father managing to shake himself from his depression [music] and fight one last glorious battle.
